Because we worked on Saturday, we were given Monday off so we still had a two day weekend. It happened to be good timing that the weekend we had Monday off fell the same weekend of the Grand Prix in Singapore on Sunday night.
This is my second time in Singapore, so there wasn’t much need to see the city. Instead, we found ourselves sitting outside at Hawker Centers and pubs watching the Rugby World Cup when we weren’t at the Grand Prix.
The event itself is much more than the race. To be honest, it’s very difficult to actually see the race itself. We had free roam tickets, so we couldn’t go up in the grandstands. There was limited space for the free roamers to see. We did manage to get to the front of some smaller stands to see a turn into a straightaway. The cars had to slow way down, then accelerate off the turn. It was quite a good spot to see the race.
The biggest appeal of the event (apart from the racing) is the bands and musicians. Before the race, Fatboy Slim, a DJ, performed. He was followed by the Red Hot Chili Peppers after the race. I’ve wanted to see them for years, so it was such a cool experience being surrounded the skyscrapers of Singapore while the Chili Peppers rocked out until midnight.
It was a really fun trip away with some good buddies I’ve made over the past year in Saigon. We’re already talking about where we’re going next.
